THE
GILLETTE ESTATE |
From TalesOfBalboa the Book
Of all the houses on the Balboa peninsula, perhaps
the most noted is the last house at the end of the
Peninsula on Balboa Bay. The Gillette Estate. This was
originally built in 1927 for King Gillette the razor
baron. The most popular story about the house is that
after the house was built; King Gillette died, leaving
the house to his two sons. The sons feuded over the
house and eventually cut the house down the middle to
make two separate houses. The son who wound up with
the house closest to the bay mouth, then in spite,
extended the front of his house several feet over the
bay just to block the view of the other son’s house.
The true story is King Gillette did have the house
built in 1927. The only time he came to Balboa to stay
in the house in the early 1930s there was a terrible
storm that prevented him from getting to Balboa.
Gillette then sold the house to a dentist who split
the house into two smaller houses and sold them. .
Over the years many people have owned the main house,
that is the house closest to the mouth of Balboa Bay.
One of the most noted owner's was Dick Dale of the
singing group ‘The Daletones' of the 1950s and 60.
Dale was known as the "King of the surf guitar." Dale
owned the house from 1976 through 1981 when he lost it
in bankruptcy. While he owned it, it was common to see
him bring his jaguar and tiger cubs down to the dock
for a swim in the bay. Over the years Dale would start
remodeling projects around the house and never finish
them. He would remove a wall here or a window there,
and then go on to something else. When the house sold
after his bankruptcy, it was put on the market as a
1.25 million-dollar fixer-upper.

What fun memories! In the 40’s & 50’s we would spend time
either in old Newport or Balboa Island each year and the Fun
Zone was where we hung out during lazy summer days.. In those
days we were allowed to swim across the bay and I learned to
swim in front of the Fun Zone when I was four (1946.) Wading
in shallow water, scooping up baby hammerhead sharks, playing
in the Fun Zone and taking the Ferry back and forth is how we
entertained ourselves while parents drank at the old Tiki Bar,
Christian's Hut. As teenagers we ate frozen bananas and tacos
for lunch every day while hanging out, rubbing on baby oil to
get tanned, peeling skin from each other's sunburned bodies
and waiting for my brother to finish working at the bust a
balloon booth in the Fun Zone. You do realize the frozen
banana was first invented and sold at the Fun Zone, don't you?
Until nine years ago, when we moved to Florida, I’d go back to
play remember and eat. Now in 2006, I’ve decided it’s high
time my five California grandkids see what I did during
summers, so in August we are going to the Laguna Beach Pageant
of the Masters and Balboa/Newport Fun Zone. The Ferry Ride and
frozen bananas are at the top of my to-do list, but I’m sure
the bumper cars will also come into play.

I read the comment about the Goodwill being stuck at low tide
by the fun zone and remembered another boat being stuck. It
was stuck around 6th Street in the Ocean. It was around 1971,
it was either an Oil Frieghter or some cargo ship. It was
stuck for a day or two. I also have wonderful memories growing
up in Balboa. It is the best place on the planet to grow up. I
lived on 8th Street between both piers for some of the 60s and
all of the 70s

My family of 5 from Northern California wants to visit
Balboa for a few hours when we drive to San Diego next
week. What Newport Bay Harbor Cruise do you recommend?
Since we're on a budget, do you know how we might be able
to get any discount coupons? Thanks!

Dear Jim
Can you tell me how I might advertize on the site for my
landscape painting classes? I've been teaching in OC for
over nine years professionally. People ask me all the
time, but I would like to create a bigger market. As you
know, I grew up in Balboa on Channel Rd., and know so many
locals, but they don't know I teach painting. Thanks for
any input you might have. Stephanie
